Cathode Ray tube allowed cathode rays travel through air rather than usual vacuum to see how far as they could before they were stopped. This suggested the particle within the cathode rays were smaller than what people thought atoms would be. Using a variety of experiments he figured out the rays were negatively charged, at least 1000 ties lighter than a hydrogen atom and all of the rays were identically charged and had identical mass.
