In 1886, a group of boers who had bought land from the Swazi people declared independence. They requested the annexation of the South African Republic [Transvaal] in 1888, though this went against the Peteora convention of 1881.

With permission from the British following the first Swaziland Convention in 1890, Transvaal was given permission to annex the Little Free State.
