This is commonly known as IDEA. It is a federal law that is in support of special education for all students. Originally called the Education of Handicapped Students act but was changed to IDEA in the 90's.

This act is put into place to ensure that students with disabilities acquire the education needed to succeed in their future lives. This law is enforced by state and school officials. Through IDEA there is a placement process that goes through various different steps in order to place students with disabilities into the interventions that they need to succeed.
