On this date the film 'Deep Throat', directed by Gerard Damiano, launched America into the 'Golden age' of pornography. This was the film that mainstreamed and enticed the idea of video pornography. While seeming crude and perhaps irrelevant, the porn industry is a strand of the film industry that is just as prominent and sizable as what ever else we consider the film industry. Hollywood releases roughly 600 movies a year and makes $10 billion in profit, the porn industry makes 13,000 films and close to $15 billion in profit. The porn industry makes more money than Major League Baseball, The NFL and The NBA combined.
This film, although not an artistic master piece, is a staple milestone in film history and cultural history. At the time going out to see a movie was considered a fashionable date activity, and the sight of normal-looking couples heading into normal-looking theaters to see a pornographic movie made pornography more acceptable and of course profitable.
The film, of course, caused a huge controversy and uprising between federal authorities and the film industry, which not only made the viewing experience even more rebellious and fun for younger people, but actually ended up creating and reinforcing staple laws and principles that make up the film industry today about what can and can't be shown on the big screen. It also opened up the conversation about censorship and the centuries of religious and cultural beliefs surrounding sex within American life, it was a shocking and groundbreaking time for sex in society, not to mention the Nixon sex scandal was also happening during the movie's prime release and an investigation was even named after the movie- this was an important time of cultural exploration of what relationship sex should have in society. Of course this lead to huge attacks on the film, however thousands where now on board and excited and ready for more, this began the development of the video porn industry.
At the peek of this strangely revolutionary time for American film and cultural history, a popcorn lady remembers working at the cinema during the height of 'porno chic' culture, she said
"The audience would walk in, they would be young and elderly, couples, singles, groups, college students and teachers, blue- and white- collar workers, all types of people, all wanted to catch a glimpse of the new wave"
That is exactly what it was, a new wave, a new form of media that could speak to the deepest forms of people. Nothing had ever opened that part of society up as mainstream as this film did.
The greatest films of all time are often assessed on how life changing or affecting a film is on a person or a point in time, and 'Deep Throat' although not exactly a cinematic masterpiece or any where near perfect, was indeed world changing and planted the seed to one of the biggest and most influential parts of the film industry today.
