ii. Hitler orders an attack because it's Stalin's city; nothing special about it really, but it has symbolic importance
iii. July 1942 almost 1,000,000 Germans begin the attack
iv. Stalin's general prepares because British/U.S. tell him the attack is coming
v. People are not evacuated
vi. Largest most brutal battle in history is fought with hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in, in order to make the Germans think they are not aware of the battle coming…civilians do not know
vii. Germans move in and over a few months, cover about 90%. HOWEVER, the Russians were moving into position, surrounding the city. Germans trapped, cutting off their supplies
viii. Germany doesn't surrender for a long time
ix. Finally Feb 1943, half a million German troops surrender
x. 300,000-400,000 people died on each side
xi. Hurts the German army; never capable of massive attacks anywhere after this
