He was an English Physician, born in 1856 in the U.K., died 1940 in the U.K. Through experimenting and studying cathode rays, he passed these rays through a vacuum and measured the angle they were deflected and and calculate the ratio of of the electrical charge to the mass of the particles. He found that the ratio is the same no matter what type of gas used, so the particles that made up the gases were universal. He came to the conclusion that all matter is made up of electrons, which are smaller than atoms. Facts- Thomson married one of his students and they had a son who also won the Nobel Prize for physics.
