Fifteen years after Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet seized power from the leftist Salvador Allende in a coup, the country held a plebiscite to vote yes or no on another eight years of continued rule by the military junta.

On 5 October 1988, 55% of the population voted ‘no’, paving the way for presidential elections in 1989.
