D.W. Griffith was an actor by trade but became a director after the director for one of his films after the director didn't turn up for work and later when he became sick he became a director full time. Griffith had quite a distinct style of film making, his films were some of the first films to contain deep social political commentary and not unlike George Méliès he made a large amount of films 60 in 1908 and 101 in 1909 but his most notable film is quite a controversial one today the 1915 production Birth of a nation which was a technical marvel with the first night time shot taken with the use of flairs, crosscutting between sceen to show impact on more than one person
