NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) is formed, with member states including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Here the organisation aimed to commit to the defence of the rest of Europe from Communist takeover, through military and political aid.

It can be said to be the Truman Doctrine, coming to fruition.
