Constantine, in the decisive battle of his campaign to claim sole imperial authority over the Roman empire after the tumultuous period of Tetrarchy, defeated his rival claimant Maxentius. According to contemporary reports, Constantine had a vision on the eve of battle of the Christian symbol the Chi Rho in the sky and heard a voice telling him "In this sign conquer." He adopted the sign as his standard and won the battle. This is thought to be the experience which led Constantine to grant Christians religious tolerance under the Edict of Milan.
