Occurred on September 11, 2001, when al-Quaeda affiliated terrorists hijacked and flew airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. A fourth plane also was directed to Washington D.C. but crashed in a field due to the passengers and crew reclaiming control of the plane. The aftermath of these attacks led directly to what president Bush called the “Global War on terrorism” and an era of greater surveillance and crack down on potential terrorist affiliations and groups, as well as greater and stricter security and military measures. One detrimental societal impact following these attacks include a rise in hate crimes toward South Asian and Middle Eastern people in the U.S.
