This war began when the Korean Communist army crossed the 38th parallel and invaded non-communist South Korea. As Kim-Sung II North Korean army, armed with tanks, quickly overran South Korea, the US came to South Korea's aid. This is important today because now that the US helped out South Korea, the US and North Koreans have had tensions to the present day.
