Hurricane Dennis makes landfall as a category 5 hurricane, hitting Miami directly. The hurricane brings a storm surge of over 30 feet, the highest recorded in US history, and wind speeds measure up to 185 mph. The hurricane leaves Miami in total devastation, before it moves west, curling up north and eventually hitting Alabama as a category 2. By the end, over 1,400 people are killed in the hurricane, or as a result of it. It's believed that the storm's strength was a result of warmer oceans brought on by climate change, and that even stronger storms could hit in the future.
