18 nov 1628 ano - First Black enslaved person
arrives in Canada (1628)
Descrição:
"When the first Black enslaved person, Olivier Le Jeune, landed on the shores of what is now Quebec in 1628, Indigenous people, called the "Panis," were already being enslaved by the French (Rushforth 2014). In New France, the buying and selling of Black men, women and children and the non--consensual unpaid labour extracted from approximately four thousand Indigenous and Black enslaved people helped build infrastructure and wealth for white settlers during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Trudel 1960: 137-156). New France's colonists supported slavery for many reasons: to make up for lagging profits in the fur trade, to try to replicate the wealth they had seen in the save economies of the West Indies and as a means of obtaining free labour for domestic and agricultural work (Rushforth 2014)."
