In the Treaty of Paris, the British Crown formally recognized American independence and ceded most of its territory east of the Mississippi River to the United States, doubling the size of the new nation and paving the way for westward expansion.Secured fishing rights to the Grand Banks and other waters off the British-Canadian coastline for American boats. This treaty also opened up the Mississippi River to navigation by citizens of both the United States and Great Britain, resolved issues with American debts owed to British creditors, and provided for fair treatment of American citizens who had remained loyal to Great Britain during the war.
