On Oct. 12 1492, Columbus and his crew reached the land on the west of the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus named the land San Salvador, naming it for Spain. Columbus thought the earth was much smaller than he soon discovered. He got approval from King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain, who promised Columbus titles like "admiral of the islands and continent" if he discovered new trade routes.
