high taxes from 100 year war mainly fell on peasants (had to pay higher taxes sometimes to release captured lords in war)
blamed nobles for taxes, unpunished criminal behavior in the countryside, defeat in war
peasants, artisans, small merchants, parish priests vs. nobility, royalty upper class
many peasants, innocent or not murder in scare tactics
when rebellion was crushed, causes for rebellion were not fixed
