Descrição:

Ernest Rutherford was one of the most influential physicists in the evolution of the atomic model. He was born in New Zealand on the 30th of August, 1871 but was a British scientist who even received a Nobel prize in 1908. He experimented with alpha particles and by firing them at gold foil, made the groundbreaking discovery that almost all the mass of an atom is concentrated into a nucleus in the middle of the atom. He found this by figuring out that the alpha particles, smaller than atoms, would sometimes pass through the foil and sometimes not. He concluded that the foil, a wall of atoms is more like a fence, letting small particles that miss the nucleus through and knocking back the ones that strike it. His model of the atom was the most influential change of the time, and his experiments soon led to the invention of the atom bomb.
