General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law in Poland on the 13th of December. This lead to the arrest of Lech Wałęsa and other Solidarity leaders. Wałęsa himself was incarcerated for 11 months in a prison near the Soviet border, and during this time Solidarity was outlawed on the grounds of it (according to the Soviets) being counter-revolutionary.
