At age 69, Reagan became the oldest person to be elected to the U.S. presidency and the 40th president. Won by capturing almost 51% of the popular vote, with running mate George H.W. Bush against opponent Jimmy Carter. Sixty nine days later, two months after his inauguration, Reagan survived an assassination attack. He served from 1981-1989
