This was the first Anglo-Boer war. The Boers defeated the British with ease by 1881 at the Battle of Majuba Hill. A second Anglo-Boer war soon ensued in 1899. This time the British prevailed.

This was a major event as it was the first time the British and the Boers had an all-out conflict in South Africa. The cause for the first Anglo-Boer war is speculated by many to be the desire by both sides to control the gold mines.
