Øst- og Vest Tyskland ble gjenforent til én stat etter berlinmurens fall. Øst-Tyskland demonstrerte mot kommunist-partiet, og mange flyktet til Vest-Tyskland via Ungarn. Det ble arrangert frie valg i Øst-Tyskland for første gang i 1990, og kommunistregjeringen måtte gå av. De to statene ble gjenforent til ett samlet Tyskland i oktober.
