In the early 1700s people started using sugar as a spice. It was also used in medicinal practices as a treatment for dry coughs, fevers and chapped lips. It was also used to balance out the rancid taste of snakeskin or faeces. A doctor quoted "Sugar is a veritable cure-all, it's only defect is that it could make ladies too fat".
