Black activists were trained in non-violence by Jim Lawson. When aggravated, the students refused to fight back. ‘Everybody want Freedom!’ Athens of the South Nashville was very proud. But the Blacks were still separated. Leo Lillard- ‘It was clear that when I was very young I had problems with asking my mum why it was- I knew what it was- but not why it was. I always thought that there was something in the back of her head that she wasn’t giving me. For many segregation would be a good lesson. Diane Nash- ‘I really felt stifled and shut in very unfairly. Jim Lawson. Rev C.T Vivian- ‘We had workshops- they made the difference. We began to understand the tactics- how to respond with some respectability. John Lewis, Angela Butler, and Diane Nash led students to the first student sit in.
