Cass senses she is not who she is. Her attempts at suicide are actually just attempts at destroying the lies of the life she is in. She starts with cutting, but her arms or legs move without her able to control it when put in danger. So she moves to more drastic measures. She tries throwing herself off the roof of the house, but lands in the only soft spot. She grabs her dad's gun and walks out to a field and tries shooting herself, but misses. She spends the next few days until school starts trying to shoot herself. The attempt in the den is only an act of laziness-- she didn't want to travel the distance to the field in the dark.
