Carter's foreign policy attempted to move away from the Cold War and realpolitik, instead attempting to focus on human rights, democratisation, and global poverty. This led to breaks with countries such as Nicaragua, due to their putdown of the Sandinistas. However, many see Carter's foreign policy as a failure especially as it culminated in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the end of détente.
