A number of rightist KMT members assassinate Chiang, in revenge for the betrayal of Hu Hanmin. It is not known whether they were operating under orders from Chen Jiongming or the New Guangxi (who lead their forces back to their home province to engage in an ultimately hopeless battle to regain it).
