United Way of Johnson County's first Day of Caring event was held on September 4th, 1994. The Day of Caring connects volunteers with partner agencies to complete projects like playground mulching and fence painting. It provides opportunities for those unable to give financially to help in other ways and shows donors the ways that their donations help the community by connecting them to partner agencies more directly.

Four years later, in 1998, United Way would partner with the University of Iowa and Iowa Athletics to present the Hawkeye Day of Caring, when Iowa's athletes put in volunteer work with partner agencies.
