This was usually occupational, for the man who pilled or peeled the bark from trees, as above, but it was also a ‘pilling’ implement. 1622 <i>choping knives, 4 pillers</i>, Cottingley (LRS1/62). Elsewhere in this man’s inventory were the items <i>in barke and toyles</i> and <i>barke unpilled</i>.
