1 jan 1069 ano - Rebellions in the North 1069

Descrição:

Robert Cumin:
After being betrayed by Morcar, William appointed Cumin as Earl of Northumbria. As he moved north, Cumin attacked towns and villages and resentment grew against him. As a result, him and his troops were killed by a group of northumbrians in Durham.

Uprising in York:
Soon after the murder, uprisings in York killed many Norman soldiers. Edgar came down from Scotland and joined the rebels. William arrived quickly with a large army and laid the entire city to waste. Edgar fled back to Scotland and William commissioned a new castle to be built with FitzOsbern as castellan.

Anglo-Danish Attack on York:
The Danish fleet arrived on the coast in September and began raiding the east coast before meeting with Edgar's troops. The Normans attempted to build defences and accidentally set the city on fire whilst clearing houses. Nearly 3000 Normans were killed and the plunder was taken back to the Danish fleet. After the revolt, the army scattered and the army set about hunting them down as several other revolts occurred over England. William paid the Danes to leave England and embarked on the large scale destruction of the north which became known as the Harrying of the North.
