Claimants to the Throne:
-Harold Godwinson
Claimed he had been appointed as the king's successor by the king on his deathbed. He had the support required to become king and was the richest and most influential man in England.

-Edgar Aethling
He was Edward's nephew and so had royal blood. However, he was still young when Edward died and did not have any military or leadership experience, which acted as a disadvantage in such a crisis.

-Harald Hardrada
He was king of Norway and was a renowned viking warrior. His claim was based upon secret deals and treaties made with Edward and his father. When Tostig turned to Hardrada for support, he believed he had enough support to become king.

-William Duke of Normandy
His claim was based on a previous agreement made between himself and Edward and was confirmed by Harold's Embassy to Normandy in 1064. He also obtained the pope's support to his claim.
