John F. Kennedy sent the CIA to aid in the overthrow of the South Vietnamese government, including the assassination of Diem because he was corrupt, unpopular, dictatorial, and didn't follow orders from the U.S. He also made rash decisions, like outlawing Buddhism in a country mainly Buddhist and executing/imprisoning people he deemed to be communist without a fair trial.
