When Governor Faubus of Arkansas denied the Little Rock Nine entry to Central High School in Little Rock despite the Supreme Court decision banning segregation in public schools, Eisenhower sent in the Arkansas National Guard, which he had placed under federal control. While some believed Eisenhower had overstepped his power, his decision helped the Little Rock Nine be enrolled in school and shut down Faubus’ defiance.
