Sputnik was launched on October 4th, 1957 and was the world’s first artificial satellite. Since it was launched by the Soviets during the Cold War, the U.S. was disappointed to lose this milestone. The launch of Sputnik intensified the Space Race, as the U.S. and the Soviets fought to be the first ones to make advancements in space.
