The fall of the Soviet Union occurred on December 26th, 1991. The Republics of the Soviet Union were granted self-governing independence as a result. At 7:32 that evening, the Soviet flag was lowered for the last time and in its place was a pre-revolutionary Russian flag. The Soviet Union now is split into 15 countries; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
