In 1271 and 1272, the Anziani introduced anti-magnate legislation, setting of a confrontation with the Lambertazzi Ghibellines. Over 2,000 citizens flocked to join a new, more overtly militaristic, spiritual company, the Compagnia della Croce, which defeated the Lambertazzi company in a forty-day pitched battle in 1274.
