USSR launched the first satellite, Sputnik, into space on October 4, 1957. This was a major scientific feat and caused a paranoia to spread all around America. People believed that the satellite was recording their conversations and spying on them. Sputnik also started what is known as the space race and caused many technological advances to be developed.
