During World War II, the US forces dropped an atomic bomb over the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This was the first atomic bomb to ever be created or dropped, and was the reason behind thousands of deaths. An estimated 40,000 deaths in Nagasaki alone, and 90% of the population in Hiroshima was impacted and injured.
