A group of 4 senior members in Chinese society that aimed to be Mao's successor:
- Zhang Chungqiao
- Wang Hangwen
- Yao Wenyuan
- Jiang Qing

Mao promoted Hua Guofeng, giving a rival to the Gang of Four.

However, the Gang of Four were arrested at a Politburo meeting. The Gang were put on trial in 1980, accused of attempting to overthrow the communist state, and all were found guilty.
