in 1991 hardliners attempted to stage a coup in a last-gasp attempt to maintain the communist rule. The coupe fell apart when millions of Russians lead by Boris Yeltsin rallied in the streets of Moscow in support of Gorbachev. Not long after, the communist nation fell apart and broke into 15 different independent republics. Yeltsin became the new leader of the largest republic, the Russian Federalism.
-the weakness and of Gorbachevs two policies, glasnost and perestroika made it easy for communism to be challenged. This is one thing that historians believe allowed for the fall of this Soviet empire to come to easily.
