The nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the world's first deployed atomic bomb.s The Hiroshima explosion wiped out 90% of the city and killed 80,000 people. More would later die because of radiation exposure. The Nagasaki explosion killed an estimated 40,000 people. Hirohito, Japan's Emperor, announced Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15.
