In 1607, the English would finally succeed in establishing a colony in the New World. The colony of Jamestown was almost a failure, but was saved by Captain John Smith, who declared that "he who shall not work shall not eat." He brought the colony back from the brink, and when he left, John Rolfe helped the colony prosper by perfecting a type of tobacco that became a massive cash crop.
