As an attempt to hold on the the previous way of communism, a coup was staged in Russia to try and take Gorbachev out of power. However, it failed when millions rose up in support of Gorbachev. Soon afterwards, the Communist Party and the Soviet Union fell apart, breaking into 15 different states, which Boris Yeltsin led as the Russian Federation.
