The Framers of the Constitution were influenced by the ideas of Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau. "We the People of the United States" entered. The Constitution created a federal republic. Separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches was an idea borrowed directly from Montesquieu. The Bill of Rights was the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. They both put Enlightenment ideas into practice. In 1789, the Constitution became the nation's fundamental law.
