(1817-1895) Born a slave, the son of a white master who impregnated his mother, he personified the abolitionist movement and the hopes and dreams of African Americans. He ran away to freedom enabling him to make the claim "I stole myself." Douglass was a gifted orator, a successful publisher of the abolitionist newspaper The North Star, he went on to become the slave's greatest advocate. Eventually appointed the U.S. Minister to Haiti, his long and productive life earned him the nickname "Sage of Anacostia."
