After King failed to consult the city of Birmingham about a protest of about 1,000 activists, he was met by police and taken to jail. In that jail, he wrote the cornerstone essay of the civil rights movement, "A letter from Birmingham Jail". This letter, sent to anti-civil rights clergymen in Alabama, is considered one of the most important American documents of all time.
