This riot occurred when there was a meeting led by MLK and several other leaders in a church in Montgomery. This meeting was meant to honor the activists. Many found out about the meeting beforehand, and the rioters met them there. They surrounded the church and there were threats to burn the church down. 600 marshals were sent to assist and defend the church.
