In 1940, the young Museum of Modern Art in New York launched a call for a
design competition, named Organic Design in Home Furnishings, which was
aimed at discovering a group of designers capable of creating a “useful and
beautiful living environment for contemporary life in terms of furniture, lighting
and textiles”
