The murder of Emmett Till was a horrific event that occurred due to a 14-year-old black boy speaking to a white woman. He was attacked by the woman's husband and her brother. His body was open casket during the funeral- his mother wanted people to see the horrific way they had treated her son. Emmett's murder was a catalyst for the civil rights movement in that it showed just how horrible things had become.
