Kim Jong-il dies due to heart attack. His son, Kim Jong-un succeeds him and becomes supreme leader of North Korea. The viewpoint of Jong-un is that he has to continue the nuclear program to survive, because he has seen the enemies of the United States cease their nuclear programs and the soon after perish, like Suddam Hussein and Muammar Gadafi.
